What does a prosthodontist do?

A prosthodontist plans and carries out treatment to rebuild damaged teeth and replace missing ones, with attention to how the teeth bite together, how they look and how the result can be maintained. Work in this field ranges from a single crown to the rehabilitation of a whole arch of teeth. Treatment often begins with a detailed assessment of the teeth, gums, bite and jaw, followed by a written plan that sets out the options.

Which treatments are offered in our prosthodontic service?

Prosthodontic care at Collins Street Specialist Centre includes:

Your prosthodontist will explain which options are suitable for you, their benefits and risks, and how long treatment is likely to take. See our prosthodontics page for more detail.

How can I check Dr Sud's registration?

You can check the current registration of any dental practitioner, including Dr Sud, on the public register at ahpra.gov.au. We encourage patients to do this before starting treatment with any practitioner.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring any recent X-rays or scans, details of past crowns, bridges, implants or dentures, a list of your medicines and health conditions, and your health fund card. If you have an existing denture or temporary restoration, wear it to the appointment. Good questions to ask include what each option involves, how many visits it needs, how it should be cared for, and what the costs and payment options are.

Who else is in our prosthodontic team?

Dr Sud works alongside our prosthodontists, Dr Fotios Angelis, Prof Vasileios Chronopoulos, Dr Jamie Foong and Dr Simon Hinckfuss. Implant and restorative plans sometimes involve our periodontists, endodontists or oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who practise in the same centre.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book with Dr Sud without a referral?

Yes. Our published guidance is that you do not need a referral to see the practitioners on our team. If your dentist has recent X-rays or notes about your teeth, ask for copies or bring them along so they can be reviewed at your consultation.

How long does prosthodontic treatment take?

It depends on the treatment. Crowns and bridges usually take more than one visit, while conventional implants are completed in stages, often with three to six months of healing between them. Your prosthodontist will give you an expected timeline and a written estimate of fees after assessing your mouth.

Can I spread the cost of treatment?

Payment plans through Payright and TLC, and early release of superannuation through Supercare, are available subject to each provider's eligibility criteria. Bring your health fund card, as some treatment may be partly covered depending on your level of cover. Details are on our payment plans page.

How do I look after crowns, bridges or implants?

Clean them as carefully as natural teeth, including between the teeth, and keep up regular reviews. Your prosthodontist will show you any special cleaning aids you need and tell you how often the work should be checked.
