Our Team of Registered Dental Specialists

Collins Street Specialist Centre has 23 registered dental specialists across six fields: oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics and paediatric dentistry. All of them consult from our practice on Level 8 of the Manchester Unity Building, 220 Collins Street, Melbourne. How should you choose a specialist?

Start with the problem rather than the person. A loose or painful tooth, bleeding gums, crooked teeth, a missing tooth or a child's dental concern each points to a different field, and our services pages explain what each covers. If you are unsure, tell our team what is happening when you call and we can suggest which specialist to see first. You can also ask for a particular specialist by name, and your general dentist may suggest one.

Each person listed here holds specialist registration in the field shown. Registration for any practitioner can be confirmed through the AHPRA public register search at ahpra.gov.au.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons

Our surgeons treat impacted wisdom teeth, place implants, carry out bone grafts and jaw surgery, and diagnose cysts and lesions. Read more on our oral and maxillofacial surgery page.

Periodontists

Periodontists look after the gums and the bone that hold the teeth in place, treating gum disease, gum recession and the soft tissue around implants.

Endodontists

Endodontists diagnose and treat problems inside the tooth, such as an infected or inflamed nerve, through root canal treatment, retreatment and related procedures.

Orthodontists

Orthodontists straighten teeth and correct how the jaws meet, for children, teenagers and adults, using braces or clear aligners.

Prosthodontists

Dr Simon Hinckfuss also practises as a Specialist Prosthodontist. Prosthodontists restore and replace teeth with crowns, bridges, veneers, dentures and implant-supported teeth, and often lead the planning when several teeth need treatment.

How does joint care between specialists work?

Some treatment plans involve two or more of the fields above. A common example is an implant: a surgeon or periodontist places it, and a prosthodontist designs and fits the tooth on top. Another is orthodontic treatment that needs gum treatment first. When this happens, the specialists involved share your records, discuss the plan and agree the order of appointments, and our patient coordinators help schedule the visits. You will always know which specialist is responsible for each stage.

Can I ask to see a particular specialist?

Yes. When you call (03) 9650 2726, let our team know the specialist you would like to see. Appointment availability varies between specialists, so if you need to be seen sooner, our team can tell you whether another specialist in the same field has an earlier time.

Why is one specialist listed under two fields?

Dr Simon Hinckfuss holds specialist qualifications in both periodontics and prosthodontics, so he appears in both groups. This can be useful when gum health and the replacement of teeth need to be planned together, for example around dental implants.

What do the letters after each name mean?

They are the specialist's academic and professional qualifications. For example, DClinDent and DCD are clinical doctorates or postgraduate degrees in a dental specialty, MRACDS and FRACDS are memberships or fellowships of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, and MBBS or MBChB are medical degrees.

Do your specialists work with my general dentist?

Yes. With your consent we can send your general dentist a report after your consultation and keep them informed during treatment. Most patients continue routine check-ups and cleans with their own dentist while seeing our specialists for the specialist part of their care.
