From general practice to specialist prosthodontics
After graduating, Dr Angelis spent six years in private practice in Melbourne. Wanting to extend his clinical skills for the benefit of his patients, he returned to the University of Melbourne for specialist training in prosthodontics. Today his work covers the full range of complex specialist reconstructive dental care.
What does complex reconstructive dental care involve?
Reconstructive care is for mouths where several teeth are worn, broken, heavily filled or missing, so that a single filling or crown will not address the problem. Rather than treating one tooth at a time, the prosthodontist looks at how all the teeth work together when you bite and chew, then plans the sequence of treatment. A plan may combine:
- crowns to cover and strengthen damaged teeth
- bridges or implants to replace missing teeth
- partial, full or implant-retained dentures
- changes to the biting surfaces so the teeth meet evenly
Some plans also need a gum specialist or an oral surgeon, for example when a bone graft or sinus lift is required before an implant. Read more on our prosthodontics page.
How is a reconstruction planned?
Planning usually starts with a thorough examination, photographs and X-rays. Where implants are being considered, a 3D cone beam CT scan may be taken on site with our Planmeca ProMax 3D Max, and implant positions can be planned with coDiagnostiX software. Dr Angelis then explains the options, including what each involves, how many visits it is likely to need, the risks, and a written estimate of fees, so you can make an informed choice.

Frequently asked questions
How is a prosthodontist different from a general dentist?
A specialist prosthodontist completes a general dental degree and then further full-time university training focused on restoring and replacing teeth, before registering as a specialist with the Dental Board of Australia. General dentists provide many crowns and dentures; a prosthodontist is often involved when treatment is extensive or more complex.
Will reconstructive treatment take several appointments?
Usually, yes. Extensive treatment is often carried out in stages, with healing time between some steps, particularly where implants or extractions are involved. Dr Angelis outlines the expected stages at the planning visit, although the timeline can change depending on how you heal.
Do I need a referral to see Dr Angelis?
Our published guidance is that you do not need a referral to see our specialists. If your dentist has referred you or has recent X-rays, please bring them to your appointment.
Can treatment costs be spread out?
Payment plans through Payright and TLC, and early release of superannuation through Supercare, may be available subject to each provider's eligibility criteria. Bring your health fund card, as part of the cost may be claimable depending on your level of cover.
