Dr Peishan Jiang, Specialist Periodontist

Dr Peishan Jiang is a Specialist Periodontist at Collins Street Specialist Centre whose clinical focus is managing long-term gum disease and disease around dental implants. She studied dentistry at Griffith University in Queensland and stayed on to complete her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Periodontology there, with postgraduate training in periodontics and dental implantology. Teaching and research

While studying, Peishan was active in the clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate dental students, and she played a key role in Griffith's Academic Policy Steering Group. She has an interest in translational dental research, the work of turning laboratory and clinical findings into everyday care, and she has presented her research at a conference of the International Association for Dental Research.

What treatments does Dr Jiang provide?

How does she approach long-term gum care?

Chronic gum and implant disease usually needs ongoing management rather than a single course of treatment. Peishan regularly works with other dental professionals, including your own dentist and hygienist, so that treatment is followed by a maintenance program aimed at keeping the gums stable over time. How well the gums respond varies, and home care and regular reviews play a large part.

If you have an implant that has started to bleed, feel tender or look different, or gums that bleed or recede, make a note of when it began. Bring details of any implant work done elsewhere (the clinic, the year and, if you have it, the implant brand), along with your medicines list, X-rays and health fund card.

Frequently asked questions

What is peri-implantitis?

Peri-implantitis is inflammation and infection of the gum and bone around a dental implant. It can cause bleeding, swelling and loss of the bone that holds the implant. Treatment ranges from deep cleaning to surgery, depending on how far it has progressed, and is followed by regular maintenance.

Why might I need a sinus lift before an implant?

In the upper back jaw, the sinus can sit close to the area where an implant is needed, leaving too little bone. A sinus lift adds bone beneath the sinus floor so there is enough height to support an implant. Whether you need one is decided from your scans.

Do I need my dentist to refer me to Dr Jiang?

How often will I need maintenance visits after treatment?

It depends on how your gums respond and on your risk factors. Dr Jiang will recommend a review schedule, which may be shared with your regular dentist or hygienist.
