Dr Angel Babu, Specialist Paediatric Dentist
Dr Angel Babu is a Specialist Paediatric Dentist at Collins Street Specialist Centre, caring for children and adolescents from birth to 18 years. She earned her Doctor in Clinical Dentistry in paediatric dentistry at the University of Otago in New Zealand, then worked as a senior dental registrar at The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and as a paediatric dentist in New Zealand for three years. Her interests include behaviour management, dental injuries, chalky teeth and the care of children with medical or additional needs. She sees families on Level 8 of the Manchester Unity Building, 220 Collins Street, Melbourne.
What qualifications does Dr Babu hold?
Our team page lists her qualification as:
- DClinDent (PAED) (Otago): Doctor in Clinical Dentistry (Paediatric Dentistry), University of Otago, New Zealand
She is registered as a paediatric dentist in both Australia and New Zealand. Her Australian registration number is DEN0002094974, with specialist registration in paediatric dentistry.
Where has she worked?
After completing her specialist training, Angel worked as a senior dental registrar at The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. She also practised as a paediatric dentist in New Zealand for three years. That mix of hospital and specialist practice experience informs the way she manages children with complex medical and dental histories.
How does she approach children's dental care?
Angel puts prevention first. She works to motivate children and teenagers to look after their own teeth, and she spends time with parents and carers on the habits that support healthy teeth as a child grows. Her care rests on respect for each child, techniques suited to their age, and close attention to how they are feeling during the visit.
What are her special interests?
Within our paediatric dentistry service, Angel has particular interests in:
- behaviour management: helping anxious or young children cope with dental visits
- dental trauma: knocked, chipped or displaced teeth after falls and sport
- dental problems related to sleep issues
- children at high risk of decay: frequent or early cavities
- hypomineralisation (chalky teeth): enamel that formed with too little mineral and can be soft, discoloured or sensitive
- medically compromised and special needs children
What treatment settings does she offer?
Some children are comfortable having treatment in the chair. For others, Angel offers treatment with nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation or general anaesthesia, including for children with complex medical and dental histories. Each option carries its own benefits and risks, and she will explain which settings may suit your child and what preparation is involved. Treatment under general anaesthesia usually takes place in a hospital or day surgery setting.
Outside work
Angel enjoys spending time with family and friends, travelling, hiking and cooking.
How can you check her registration?
You can find Dr Angel Babu on the public register at ahpra.gov.au, which shows her registration and specialist field.
Preparing your child for the first visit
Tell us about your child's medical history, medicines, any allergies and how previous dental visits have gone. If your child has had an injury to a tooth, call us promptly. Bring any X-rays or letters from your family dentist, and consider bringing a favourite toy for younger children.
Our other paediatric dentists
Angel works alongside our specialist paediatric dentists Dr Susan Hinckfuss, Dr Sarah Scott and Dr Aish Kesava.
Frequently asked questions
What are chalky teeth?
Chalky teeth, or hypomineralisation, describes enamel that did not harden fully while the tooth was forming. Affected teeth can look white, yellow or brown, may be sensitive, and can break down or decay more easily. Management depends on how severe it is and can range from protective coatings to fillings or crowns.
What should I do if my child knocks out or chips a tooth?
Call us as soon as possible on (03) 9650 2726. If an adult tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown rather than the root, keep it moist in milk, and seek care urgently. Baby teeth that are knocked out are not put back, but the area should still be checked.
Is a referral needed for my child to see Dr Babu?
For children, please confirm any referral requirements when you book. Call (03) 9650 2726 and our team will explain what is needed. If your family dentist has written a letter or taken X-rays, bring them along.
Can she treat my child under sedation?
Angel offers nitrous oxide, oral sedation and general anaesthesia for suitable patients. Whether sedation is appropriate depends on your child's age, health and the treatment needed, and this is discussed with you at the consultation.
